This is how either Microsoft FrontPage or Microsoft Expression Web will automatically assign node numbers for the navigation view of web pages.

The labels or titles above correspond exactly to the node number.
The following rules apply to Microsoft's navigation node numbering system:
-
The Home Page or root navigation node will receive "0".
-
The Home Page or root navigation node will receive all of 0's children will be numbered next and their node numbers as 1, 2 and 3.
-
Then it will go back to the earliest child in step 2 above (node 1) and number 1's children as 4, 5 and 6.
-
Then it will go back to the earliest child in step 3 above (node 4) and number 4's children as 7, 8 and 9.
-
Then it will go back to the earliest child in step 4 above (node 7) and number 7's children a 10 and 11.
-
Then it will go to the next sibling of the parent of the children named in step 5 above. The children named in step 5 were 10 and 11. Their parent was 7. 7's next sibling is 8. So 8's children will be numbered next as 12 and 13.
-
8's next sibling (9) does not have any children.
-
It goes up to the parent of the last sibling 9 which is 4.
-
It goes to 4's next sibling which is 5 and numbers 5's children a 14, 15 and 16.
-
14 does not have any children, so it goes to 14's next sibling 15 and numbers 15's children as 17.
-
Then it goes to 15's next sibling 16 and sees no children to be named.
-
Since 16 is the last sibling, it goes to 16's parent 5 and then to 5's next sibling 6.
-
Since 6 has no children, it goes to 6's parent 1 and then to 1's next sibling 2 and numbers 2's children as 18 and 19.
I will give 3 examples in the next section to add a new file to the web site and assign it to the proper navigation area.
